Why a separate Finishing and Converting Newsgroup is needed.

Most of you are probably aware of the "misc.industry.pulp-and-paper" newsgroup presently in use on the Internet. If you are one of those that use this newsgroup on a regular basis the increased interest and activity is very apparent. This newsgroup is undoubtedly the number one reason for the increased use of the Internet by the pulp and paper industry.

Right now, if you were to post a finishing item in the pulp and paper newsgroup it may get lost in the numerous paper machine activity listings. As activity increases in the pulp and paper newsgroup it will become increasingly difficult to find and sort the finishing postings. Additionally, it may be preferable if the pulp and paper newsgroup were dedicated solely to the paper machine entity of our industry.

A similar level of interest and activity to that of the pulp and paper newsgroup can be generated by those involved in the Finishing and Converting sector of our industry.

THE PROPOSAL

The proposal is to start a Finishing and Converting newsgroup as an extension of the misc.industry.pulp-and-paper newsgroup. This new newsgroup would generally follow along the lines of the activities of the Finishing and Converting Division of TAPPI. This would be a newsgroup dedicated to supercalendering, winding, sheeting, roll wrapping, material handling, shipping and warehousing, etc. Hopefully a name can be selected that will place the new newsgroup directly adjacent to pulp and paper to link them as closely as the machine reel and winder.
