Papermaking in the US

This commemorative post card was issued in 1990 by the United States Postal Service honoring the 300th anniversary of paper making in the US.

The wood cut is a reproduction of the Rittenhouse Paper Mill. According to the information on this card the woodcut depicts the Rittenhouse Mill as it appeared about 1770. The Rittenhouse Mill was established in America  in 1690 by William Rittenhouse near Germantown, Pennsylvania. History credits it as being the first paper mill in the US. 

This particular post card carries two postmarks.

The first postmark covers the watermark at the left of the card, dated Feb 5, 1991, Jacksonville Beach, FL.

The second watermark is located in the conventional position, dated Feb 6, 1991, Jacksonville, FL, ZIP 32203.

This is another wood carving of the Rittenhouse mill. Date of the carving is  unknown. The image at left was reproduced from the article, "Papermaking in Delaware" by Barbara E. Benson of the Historical Society of Delaware.
