Dard Hunter-his biography William Joseph "Dard" Hunter was born in 1883 to a
Steubenville, Ohio family living at the height of the industrial revolution. Hunter felt that his greatest accomplishment in life was the establishment of the Dard Hunter Paper Museum.

Deutsches Museum The forerunners of paper were papyrus, parchment and tapa. These materials and the age of hand-made paper are the main topics of the first section of the exhibition. The second part of the exhibition covers the beginnings of industrial paper manufacture.


First 10 Newspapers in US Both Foreign and Domestic, the first newspaper published in America, was printed by Richard Pierce and edited by Benjamin Harris in Boston on September 25, 1690.


Hagley Museum of Wilmington The research library was founded by Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) as the Longwood Library in 1953. Eight years later it merged with the Hagley Museum and moved to the site of the original DuPont Company powder works near Wilmington, Delaware.


Hammanasset Paper Mill Site 1860 The Hammanasset Paper Mill Site is the site of a small mill built around 1865 to produce straw board, a paper product used for making boxes. Straw board is practically unknown today but was once a product of great importance.

History of Watermarks It was about 1750 when the Green family began business as wire drawers and weavers. By 1795 John Green the younger had a flourishing business, serving the paper mills in the locality of Maidstone in Kent, making a screen by laying straight wires close together and sewing them to a wooden frame.

Mecanisation of Paper Industry In the 1790s members of the industry in both Paris and London were working on inventions to try to mechanise paper-making. In England John Dickenson produced the cylinder machine that was operational by 1809.

Norske Skog-Brief Paper History It is recognised today that paper was discovered in China. The first documentary evidence concerning paper dates from 105 A.C. In that year Cai Lun, the manager of the Imperial Arsenal, reported to the Emperor that he had succeeded in producing paper from the raw materials bark, hemp, rags and old fishing nets.

Paper History According to tradition, paper was first made in AD 105 by Ts'ai Lun (50?-118), a eunuch attached to the Eastern Han court of the Chinese emperor Ho Ti (r. 89-105). The material used was probably the bark of the mulberry tree, and the paper was made on a mold of bamboo strips

Parchment  Parchment as a writing material antedates paper by possibly 1500 years, although the name is derived from Pergamum, an ancient city in Asia Minor where its discovery is usually credited to King Eumenes II, in the second century BC.


Papyrus-The Forerunner of Paper Although the word paper is derived directly from Papyrus, Papyrus is not Paper !! The difference is that papyrus is a laminated material made from thinly cut strips from the stalk of Cyprus Papyrus plant etc.


Short History-Machine Clothing All paper was made by hand without fundamental change until the early 19th Century. Throughout this time woven textile materials were an essential tool in the operation, acting as a medium onto which a suspension of various fibres was poured.

Tsai, Lun, Tsai, Lun, is the inventor of paper. He lived and served as an official at the Chinese Imperial Court at the Han Dynasty in China at about 1800 years ago. In or about the year 105 A.D.


Uncasville Mill History The Uncasville Recycled Mill began in 1910 as the Thames River Plant. The original facility consisted of two cylinder machines for the production of box board. Number 1 Machine was installed in 1910 and Number 2 Machine was installed in 1912. In 1924, Robert Gair purchased the Mill.


US Paper Money-History In the early days of the nation, before and just after the revolution, Americans used English, Spanish, and French money. In 1690 Colonial Notes The Massachusetts Bay Colony issued the first paper money in the colonies which would later form the United States.


Whatmans and Wove (Velin) Paper For 500 years European paper makers could only produce what came to be called Laid paper. In 1757 John Baskerville printed his famous edition of Virgil on a new kind of paper, called Wove (known in Europe as Vélin).


Wookey Hole Papermill 1610 For almost 400 years skilled craftsmen have been producing fine quality handmade paper at Wookey Hole, reaching a peak under the ownership of the Hodgkinson family at the turn of this century. Then the papermill employed over 200 men and women and produced bank notes and security papers for a worldwide market.
