THE JONES STORY (1845 - 1958)
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Dwight E. Jones was probably the most qualified person to write the original Jones Story (now Part One). As the chief engineer for many years, he authored many technical articles on the pulp and paper industry. He retired in 1966 after serving with the company for 46 years and rising to the position of executive vice president. Although Mr. Jones bore the same last name of the company founders, he was not related to them.
Dwight's original employment at Jones actually began while he was working his way through high school. Since Otis, Massachusetts, his home town (as well as that of E.D.G. Jones, founder of the company), had no high school and transportation was impractical in those days, Dwight moved to Pittsfield as a youth, attended Pittsfield High, and worked in the shop and the drafting room at Jones.
Mr. E.A. Jones, son of the founder E.D. Jones, and second president of the company, sponsored Dwight through college. He graduated from Worcester Tech with a B. S. in Mechanical Engineering, and later served as one of their trustees from 1956 until 1966.
After graduating he formally began at Jones in 1928, holding many positions including cost analyst, superintendent, purchasing agent, chief engineer, and executive vice president to name a few. He was issued 15 patents on ideas he developed for improvements in Jones' equipment. He was a member of many professional engineering and paper industry organizations.
Civically, Dwight walked in the footsteps of the other Jones', holding many positions of responsibility, in 1956, he was appointed chairman of the newly created Pittsfield Sewer Commission to which he devoted 10 years. During his tenure, an $11.4 million modernization of the system was completed which ended the dumping of raw sewage into the Housatonic River.
After retiring, Dwight moved to Arcadia, California where he resided until passing away in 1972
The author of Part Two, Henry H. (Terry) Williams III, is the third Henry Williams to work as a part of the "Jones Family", spanning a period over the past 85 years. Henry Sr., who served 46 years, began with the company in 1910 as an office boy and was executive vice president when he retired in 1956. Henry Jr.'s 22-year Jones career ran from 1951 to 1973 during which he held many financial positions, including three years as vice president of finance for the entire Beloit Corporation.
Terry, the manager of pricing and billing for Fiber Systems Division for the past three years, has also held positions in the production scheduling and credit management areas during his twenty-one years with the company. He has been chairman of the Dalton finance committee for the past five years. In addition, Terry is co-host of "Speak-Out Berkshires", a three-year-old issues program on local access television in Pittsfield.
He is married to the former Jane Walsh. The couple have three children; Emily, Taylor, and Parker. A Dalton native, Terry graduated in 1974 from Ithaca College in New York with a B. S. degree in Business Administration.
